Didn't Vote to Subsidize Hollywood or Put Teachers on Appraisal Boards

When Republican lawmakers (along with the Governor and Lt. Governor) throw taxpayer money at movie producers, they're spending funds that should have gone toward tax cuts or pay-as-you go for road improvements instead of debt. That would be putting Texans first. Whatever "return" they tell you this might bring to Texas, the widow living in rural Texas will receive none of that return. Nor will 99% of Texas taxpayers. This ridiculous expense of your money doesn't benefit anyone but a few.

When you see these Republicans boasting how conservative they are, ask them to justify taking money from working families to give it to Big Hollywood. No lawmaker wants to answer that question.

Ask anyway.

SB 974 sought to amend Section 6.412(c) of the Texas Tax Code to allow public school teachers to serve on appraisal review boards (ARBs).

Under current law, employees of taxing units, including school district employees, are ineligible to serve on these boards due to potential conflicts of interest.

This bill would create an exception for teachers, permitting them to participate in the property tax appeals process, which determines property valuations that directly impact tax burdens.

This is one of a couple of dozen bills that the governor vetoed when it reached his desk. It should never have gotten to him in the first place.
